The Laurel Ridge Elementary School (LRES) Parent and Teacher Association (PTA) is comprised of parents, teachers, and staff who work together in support the students with their school needs.
The PTA is led by five elected officers (President(s), Vice President(s), Secretary and Treasurer); and a variety of committees.
CULTURAL ARTS Coordinators work with the teachers to identify 1 cultural event for each grade level. (examples are Lion Trap, Colonial Day, Queen Bess for 5th grade Renaissance fair…..) Stay within budget. Plan a family night that parallels one of the in school events. This evening event is open to all LRES families with a requested donation to cover the expenses.
SPECIAL EDUCATION SPECIALS Responsible for setting up workshops of interest for the PTA meetings. (ex. Internet safety, bullying) After you coordinate the schedule with the PTA and the speaker, make sure you have the appropriate equipment available for the event. You will also prepare flyers to be sent home in the Wednesday folders as the parents advance reminder.
VOLUNTEER COORDINATOR Send out a questionnaire out in the Wednesday folders at the end of the school year and then at the beginning requesting volunteers for specific positions. Collect all the data and put a list of who would like to volunteer for what,(baking, school pictures, fairs, ect.). Contact parents as needed for volunteers for a specific event. Keep contact with all committee chair persons and Executive Board members.
COMMUNITY NIGHT Contact community groups in early August to get them signed up for the September event. (Boy and Girl Scout troops, School clubs, Karate groups outside school, ect.) See Cathy in the front office to reserve the cafeteria for the desired date. (usually held within the first 2 weeks of school) Coordinate the needs of all your participating groups. Arrange tables in cafeteria for easy flow of human traffic. Label tables with groups names Prepare and distribute a flyer in Wednesday folders advertising the event. Be in attendance to answer any questions.
FLEX (FOREIGN LANGUAGE EXPERIENCE PROGRAM) FLEX is offered at our building before and after school starting in early October. Once a week classes in beginner and intermediate Spanish, French and Sign Language are taught by Fairfax County Teachers for 20 weeks and include introductory social dialog, pictures, books, lessons, stories, songs, and basic culture of the country. As coordinators, you will be responsible for booking instructors, communicating with the principals to obtain building use permission and confirming class schedules. You will also communicate with parents to introduce the program and schedule and fill all classes. Handle registration fees (turn them into PTA treasurer), emergency forms, coordinating with the county FLEX office and handling questions and concerns that cannot be handled by the teachers or Laurel Ridge staff. The first letters to the parents should be distributed in the first day folders and then again at Back to School nights. The Program does not require much volunteer time once the program is up and running in late October. Prior to start up, it is very time consuming, requiring much time on the phone, at the school, and working with teachers and FLEX office. To get all classes filled and up and running.
LOST AND FOUND COORDINATOR Set up racks at the beginning of the school year. Check Lost and Found area weekly to maintain order and check items for names. If items are labeled, turn into front office. Advertise to parents to take a last look during the Craft Fair before items are bagged the week before Winter Break and donated to charity. Advertise again at end of year to take last look before bagging up items and donating before the close of school for the summer. Bag up hangers and place in PTA closet for summer. Take apart racks and store in PTA closet for summer.
THANKSGIVING LUNCHEON Work with the front office, cafeteria, and PTA to organize volunteers for the event. Organize volunteers to help serve food from each lunch line (3 each line), distribute paper goods to students after they have been seated, make and distribute juice, help decorate the café and gym. Arrange decorations from the Girl Scouts, kindergartners, and art teachers. Work with the office for ticket distribution, class lunch schedules and signs.
